Anton Bruckner's "Zero" was not a zero piece. It was composed in 1869 after the "First" and initially bore the title "Symphony No. 2 in D minor." Only later, while working on the "Third," did Bruckner declare it "completely invalid." The reason remains unclear. He did not destroy the score but bequeathed it to the OÖ Landesmuseum. Perhaps the innovative motivic structure was too experimental for him. All the more remarkable is Bruckner's connection to Leipzig: with the "Seventh," he celebrated his first major success there. Gade and Reinecke also shaped the Gewandhaus Orchestra there. 550 kilometers separate Wels and Leipzig. Music knows no boundaries.
