Benedikt Mitmannsgruber – "1996"
Out of nowhere, Benedikt Mitmannsgruber has suddenly turned 30. Surrounded by forests, cows, and farms, he reflects on the past few years. In the attic of his parents' house, he discovers an old album containing his family's genealogy – and embarks on a quirky journey into the past.
This journey begins in the early 20th century in a village near the Czech border, where his great-grandparents had 15 children. His parents grow up in the 60s next to the Iron Curtain, somewhere in no man's land between Austria and the Czech Republic. In the 90s, Benedikt is born – into a world where he never quite fits in, yet one he loves nonetheless.
"1996" is a tribute to growing up in the middle of nowhere, a love letter to forgotten villages, and a humorous look at family, heritage, and a world that is increasingly falling apart.
