"Beyond Time"

The title of the exhibition refers to the transcendent origin and timeless dimension of icon painting. Starting from the mysterious mummy portraits of Fayum, which were developed by early Christians into one of the most significant forms of spiritual art, a visual language unfolds that makes the invisible tangible. The icon is much more than a devotional image: it is a place of encounter, contemplation, and inner transformation. For centuries, monks have meditated on this "window to heaven," which symbolizes the transition from the visible world to the Absolute.

The artist couple Loukas and Irene Seroglou presents, following a successful premiere last year, the thematic diversity and artistic depth of icon painting with their objects. In addition to classic depictions of saints, small-format icons framed by Byzantine and Italian book ornamentation will be showcased. A particular focus of this year's exhibition is on a new series of works inspired by the churches of the Wachau. The first icons of this series are already being presented, offering a glimpse into an artistic project that will be completed next year. In these works, the spiritual tradition of the icon merges with the sacred architecture of the region.

The exhibition can be seen with free admission from June 16 to July 12, 2026, every Tuesday to Sunday from 9 AM to 6 PM at the Stift Dürnstein.
