Vocal Academy Freiburg: Claudio Monteverdi

Monteverdi's Vespers Unites Voices and Sounds from the Tri-Border Region With Claudio Monteverdi's Vespers (SV 206), musicians from Germany, France, and Switzerland bring one of the most significant works in European choral history to the stage. The concerts on September 27 at the Martinskirche in Müllheim and on September 28 at the Temple Neuf in Strasbourg are the result of intensive trinational collaboration led by Frank Markowitsch. In addition to the chamber choir and the Institute for Historical Performance Practice at the Freiburg University of Music, Markowitsch's professional ensemble, the Vokalakademie Freiburg, as well as students from the Conservatoire de Strasbourg and HEAR Mulhouse-Strasbourg are involved. The project is also supported by CHŒUR3, the International Choral Academy in the tri-border region, and the Freiburg Research and Teaching Center for Music (FZM). Together, the project partners have realized a choral music project that no single institution could have accomplished alone. During a week-long working and meeting phase, the participants will prepare Monteverdi's impressive Vespers setting, which was created in 1610 as an auditory bridge between the Renaissance and Early Baroque. Using historical instruments and adhering to appropriate performance practices, a multilingual ensemble of aspiring and professional musicians will bring the magnificent double choirs, virtuosic solo songs, and intricate polyphonies impressively to life.
