An der Dunsthöhle, 31812 Bad Pyrmont

The mist cave is located on the grounds of a former quarry, where sandstone was extracted in the 17th century. Quarry workers noticed a "mist" at a certain depth, which caused people to faint. Dead birds and other animals were repeatedly found in the pit. When the famous well doctor Dr. Johann Philipp Seip came to Pyrmont in 1712, he investigated the phenomena. He suspected that it was sulfur mist. Carbon dioxide (CO2) was only discovered as an air acid a few years later. The peculiar behavior of the CO2 source gas has continued to impress visitors from Seip's time to the present day. The gas is one and a half times heavier than air, thus it settles in the pit and rises in the mist cave only to the height of the railing of the visitor walkway. It mainly reacts to air temperature and air pressure. Alongside the moor and the brine, the CO2 source gas is the third valuable natural remedy of Bad Pyrmont. The CO2 source gas baths are used as treatment for various ailments within the therapy offerings of the state bath Pyrmont at the health center KÖNIGIN-LUISE-BAD. The CO2 source gas creates a feeling of warmth, which is attributed to its blood circulation-promoting effect.
