On Saturday, July 18, 2026, the Bad Saulgau City Museum Working Group invites you to its traditional Beer Day. Starting at 9 a.m., brewers will demonstrate the art of beer brewing using a mobile brewhouse. Visitors can also look forward to the 10th “Bächtle” festival beer, a beer mug sliding contest with prizes, and refreshments provided by the Bürgerwache.
For fans of Bad Saulgau’s local history, brewing traditions, and the traditional Bächtle Festival, as well as for many curious visitors, the volunteer-run Bad Saulgau City Museum Working Group, led by Beate Rimmele, is once again organizing a highlight event on Saturday, July 18, 2026. In remembrance of the great significance that brewing once held for the town of Bad Saulgau, several brewers will once again be brewing beer in front of the City Museum on Schleifergasse using a mobile brewing system. There will also be great prizes to win at the traditional beer mug slide. The Bürgerwache will provide refreshments for visitors. The event begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m.
With the mobile brewery, the City Museum Working Group—which, under the leadership of Hans Georg Rimmele, developed the museum’s ground-floor Beer and Brewing section in the late 1990s—is bringing an exciting chapter of the city’s history to life. Over a hundred years ago, the “beer town” of Saulgau was home to some twenty breweries and around thirty taverns. With the demonstration brewery and its mobile brewing system, the working group offers a hands-on, sensory experience of how beer is brewed. The expertise is provided by homebrewer Jürgen Heiss from Emmingen-Liptingen and his wife Resi, as well as, for the first time, the young brewer Lara Rothmund from Hochberg. Hans Georg Rimmele, a leading authority on beer history in Bad Saulgau and Upper Swabia for decades—a trained brewer and maltster himself and, together with Beate Rimmele, a recipient of the district’s Culture Award—is delighted with the new addition: “In the past, the profession of brewer and maltster—involving hard work in both heat (the brewhouse) and cold (the beer cellar)—was exclusively a man’s job. That has changed with modern technology, and so more and more women are now learning this traditional trade.”
**Also in attendance: Mayor Osmakowski-Miller at the mashing**
The event begins at 9 a.m. Visitors can experience firsthand the steps involved in traditional beer production. Starting at 11 a.m., Mayor Osmakowski-Miller will be at the brewery as a guest of honor for the official mashing ceremony. In addition, the highly sought-after 10th edition of the “Bächtle” festival beer will be available in swing-top bottles featuring new, original labels designed by graphic designer Frank Müller, the great-grandson of brewery owner Julius Blauw. The “Bächtle” beer itself was donated by Jürgen Ott, senior partner at the Schussenried Brewery. Frank Müller from the City Museum Working Group: “After ten editions of our ‘Bächtle’ beer, each with different labels, it has now become a small, coveted collector’s series.”
**Beer Mug Sliding from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.**
Finally, the traditional beer mug sliding contest, taking place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the beer slide, promises plenty of fun. With a bit of skill, participants must score at least 27 out of a possible 30 points to qualify for the raffle—multiple attempts are expressly allowed. The grand prize consists of three complete anniversary sets of the “Bächtle” festival beer, which combine all ten historic editions in a special beer carrier and are therefore not available for purchase anywhere. In addition, gift certificates for the Sonnenhof-Therme Bad Saulgau will be raffled off. The ceremonial drawing of the winners will then take place at 2:00 p.m. right at the City Museum. Proceeds from the beer mug slide and beer sales will benefit the City Museum and its next major special exhibition, set to open in December 2026.
