After the gloom and deprivation of the First World War, a period followed in Germany, particularly in the capital Berlin, when an unbridled hunger for life and a thirst for freedom were palpable. Never before had such beautiful chansons been composed in German. The songs of love and sorrow, of banal everyday problems or idiosyncratic life situations, enchant with their subtle humor, their understated wit, and their poignant melancholy. And they often invite the listener to sing or hum along—one need only think of Zarah Leander, Marlene Dietrich, and the Comedian Harmonists. Poems and artist biographies, recited by Heilswint Hausmann, illuminate the spirit of this turbulent and fateful era, but also hint at the dark clouds gathering in the form of fascism.
