Program:
Franz Schubert (1797-1828): 5 Menuets with 6 Trios D 89
Wolfgang Amadé Mozart (1756-1791): Concertone for Two Violins and Orchestra in C Major KV 190
Joseph Haydn (1732-1809): Symphony No. 56 in C Major Hob I:56

Heinrich Christoph Koch describes the fermata in 1802 as a point of rest where the rhythmic movement is consciously interrupted to sustain a note or a pause longer. The sign for this: a curved line with a dot. Koch associates the fermata with the expression of wonder or exhaustion of a feeling.

In Haydn's Symphony No. 56 in C Major, the composer employs fermatas in the first movement at three points. The first interrupts the flow before the second theme, which is played solely by the strings. The second appears in the harmonically unstable development, where Haydn briefly lingers. The third emphasizes the recurring side theme, now with solo oboe.
